It may not be 2001, a nice year for a space Oddessy,
but 23 years ago today David Robert Jones decided not
to be a Monkee - that would be a bit odd - but he produced
a masterpiece from the ashes and dust. You may also know him
better by his stage name; he released his
Space Oddity single on this day in 1969.

Actor, mime, singer, song-writer.

Teenager and friends gets Decca contract.

Early on is advised to change name to avoid Monkee
mistake1.

Soon solo. Space Oddity becomes staggering
success.

Successful Ziggy Stardust phase combines mime, glam,
rock.
