One of my favorite nightclubs in Chicago is The Green Mill. It is a smallish place on the near north side. It has always featured a varied and ecclectic mix of different music with an emphasis on jazz.
I find the crowd to be pleasant and generally well-behaved, with a marked emphasis on being appreciative to good musicians.

Actually the Green Mill is very famous. I had been a speakeasy during prohibition, and was one of the few North Side venues run by Al Capone.

The Green Mill is infamous for being the place the singer Joe E. Brown was converted to Joe E. Brown the comic. It seems that Brown was a highly regarded nightclub singer under contract to The Green Mill, some other nightclub owner(gangster) tried to entice him away. When Brown asked to be released from his contract, his employer had his throat cut, damaging his vocal cords and ending his singing career.
