Talking Point: Christmas Favourites

That may have been how Nat King Cole immortalised the festive season in song all those years ago1, but these days Christmas is more about settling down with an industrial-sized box of confectionary to watch a TV special or movie, or hollering along to Slade or Sir Cliff while wearing wilting reindeer antlers at your office party.

So we were wondering which seasonal favourites you'll be firing up the DVD or tuning for, or taping your feet along to this year. Basically, what are the hardy Christmas perennials that no silly season should be without?

  • What's your favourite festive movie? Is no Christmas complete without It's a Wonderful Life or The Great Escape? And which screen Scrooge do you prefer, Alastair Sim's or The Muppets'?

  • Which Christmas songs do you never tire of hearing? Is it all about the 1970s glam of Slade or Wizzard for you, or the rough and ready, and more contemporary, charms of Kirsty Maccoll and the Pogues' Fairytale of New York?

  • Which TV shows are a must-see for you this year? Has it got to be the Queen's Speech and Top of the Pops on the big day, or do you search the channels for Morecambe and Wise, or The Two Ronnies? Or is all about the soaps and Doctor Who? Maybe your goggle box is unplugged completely, ignored for more edifying pursuits - like Charades or, um, Trivial Pursuits?

  • And speaking of more edifying things, is your mind on higher cultural forms of entertainment? Is The Nutcracker or Swan Lake on stage, or the Birmingham Royal Ballet's Cinderalla on BBC Two on Christmas Day, more your cup of Earl Grey? Do you seek out the choral music on Radio 3 or Carols From King's, or lose yourself in good book or scary Christmas short story on Christmas Eve?
