A Conversation for Discussion of h2g2 Language Policy

Volunteering if need of a translator

Post 1

Methink that English is a very convenient international language, but being fluent in a couple of others, I hope I can help for some translation if needed...
(Nothing too heavy or too technical, please...)

That would be from any of :

French
Spanish
Chinese Mandarin
English

to any of :

French
English
Chinese Mandarin

I saw there was a badge for h2g2 translators, but a search for "translators" did not give much...
Is it possible that the badge arrived before the function is actually created ?

How do you translate to Mandarin?
I mean, do you write in characters or the english pronunciation?

Right...
I must admit I hadn't thought about that in the h2g2 environment...

The thing is, I am usually working in an environment where both Chinese and latin characters are available and properly displayed on everybody's computers...

But I am sure there is a way around that :
- using actual Chinese characters (big5 or Unicode), and non-equipped readers will see mumbo-jumbo, like this:
§AÀ´§Úªº·N«ä¶Ü?
- using English transliteration (most common being PinYin)
- for very short messages, using pictures (.gif) of Chinese characters,
- work from external files (can then be large pics, or any other format), and display only the English translation in h2g2.

I'll have to check, but I think that with the most recent systems (I am talking about MS Windows stuff here, I do not know about Macs and Unix and the others), you'd just have to put the proper headers in the HTML page to display Chinese characters...

Were you just curious, testing me, or do you have other suggestions ? smiley - smiley

and, by the way, just out of curiosity, if you manually set your "View/Character set", can you chose "Chinese-Big5" with your current system ?
If so, what do you then see in the line where I alledgedly typed Chinese ?

This isn't an official page - it's an entry I created a little while back to get my thoughts down on something. Try <./>Feedback</.> instead.

I think if someone wanted to get translations to chinese, they would have the proper programs and *stuff* on their computer to read it?
