The French Open is behind us, Wimbledon is fast approaching and today marks the birth 87 years ago of the first man to win not just these two but also the US and Australian championships all in the same year.

Youthful interest in baseball, basketball and football gave way to tennis.

At nineteen made Davis Cup team.

In 1938 he won 43 matches lost two at eight tournaments.

Included the Grand Slam, turned pro following year so unable to defend.
