I think there are far too many people who already have access to details of our lives apart from those concerned with law enforcement - think of junk mail, targeted mail or phone marketing, credit ratings, medical records, insurance.
For many of us this may be intrusive but not harmful, but it can have serious effects, particularly if the data is incorrect or incomplete.
This area does seem to be opening up, such as the right to see one's medical records. I am glad to see the option on some order forms not to have my details passed on to 'similar companies' but there are still many circumstances when this option is not available and details are made available to organisations without our consent or knowledge.
In principle, as I feel I have nothing to hide, I would not be averse to revealing personal information (including mail, phone records) to the police if I felt they had good reason to request it. But I am opposed to government, law enforcers or any one else being able to demand this or obtain it without my knowledge.
CCTV surveillance & certain security procedures do not worry me (although it's disconcerting to realise you've just e.g. adjusted your underwear in full view of a camera when you thought you were unobserved), as I feel they do at least make us feel safer, but none of these systems are infallible.
What seemed to me to be the most pertinent point in Enemy of the State was the question, who monitors those doing the monitoring?

Qui custodiet ipsos custodes? If you want the latin version.
Someone also said "No man is wise enough or good enough to be trusted with unlimited power." I'd say the same goes for goverments.
