A Conversation for Talking Point: What makes you cry?

So what movies have you cried about?
There's four movies I remember crying over. When I watched King Kong I cried over the ending. Seeing that gorilla gunned down was quite sad. But I was also just nine.
Then there is Mr Holland's Opus and With Honours. Both movies are about achieving something in your life. And the endings were quite emotional for me, as that is something I very much want to do.
When I watched The Sixth Sense the second time my grandmother had died not too long before. And that last scene in the car brought a tear to my eye.

I can relate to this one. During my college years I don't remember crying even once. It wasn't as if my late teenage years were overwhelmingly happy or anything - anything but, really. But that was the way it was - I never cried for years.
Then, went over to the US on a student visa, and I had a marvellous time. For the first time in a long time, I really felt happy. Then one night while I was there, I sat down and watched "The Colour Purple" on my own, and half-way through, I launched into a crying fit that lasted ages. And afterwards, I never felt so satisfied about it. I felt really, really great.
Since then, lots of things can bring a tear to my eye. Movies, particularly. It's hard to explain, but I can't complain about it. Nothing wrong with a good weep - especially if you are a guy...

Hello,
For some reason my favourite movie is also the only one I have ever cried about. It is "It's a Wonderful Life" starring Jimmy Stewart. When George is reprieved from death and he goes back to his family and everyone goes into his house with the money to save him I just well up. But don't ask me to reveal my true name on this one!
Cheers,
Myriad.

Umm, probably because traditionally in most western countries, guys are not supposed to cry. B***s**t if you ask me.

Well, feelings are in general considered signs of weakness.
I once cried in front of my gf, I think that's one of the reasons she dumped me.

That's a pity . Feelings are also a sign that you care about things. Crying once, then being dumped, sounds odd, and you shouldn't blame yourself for that. But what do I know? Sorry to hear it.

About the only thing that has ever made me cry as a sober adult was Courage Under Fire[F66665?thread=114708]. I loved the movie, but I've only watched it twice, because I break down at the end. I cried just a little boit during Blackhawk Down.
I think it's because seeing the Army as I remember it brings back my emotions from the Gulf War. I wasn't involved in Somalia, but the depiction of soldiers that they did was so emotionally on target that it affected me a little bit.
Aside from that, I think I cried once when I was really drunk and my girlfriend and I were playing strip Sex Trivia and you had to drink everytime you got something wrong. I don't know what made us start crying, but she didn't dump me, she married me.
The only other time I've cried in adulthood was when I was 17, hungover and I thought I was in a lot of trouble in Korea.
I'm pretty much resolved not to cry without good cause. I don't have a probelm with it, but it should be a significant event.

The only two movies I ever shed some form of liquid from my eye were Forest Gump and The Fox and the Hound.
Forest Gump was sad because all the people he loved died, and Fox and Hound made me cry because seeing cute, baby animals crying just about cripples any sane person.

Blues Shark over it's a wonderful life as well. Funnily enough, him (and my ex-husband) are always having a grizzle at sad films. He was at ET as well. Maybe I like men who are big enough to have a sniffle when they want one.
I on the other hand hate crying, and I never do it it public. I cried when my son went on holiday with my parents, 4 days after he's come home from holiday with his dad. I was very

Xanatic: I would _never_ dump a guy because he cried!
About movies: I cried in Lion King when he thought he had killed his father - I was about 20 at the time. I felt a bit silly about that (it's not even as if it was real people acting!), and annoyed with the Disney people for knowing so well which buttons to press... But I think crying over movies once in a while is a good thing - Usually you're probably crying over something quite different, and the movie is just a trigger.

Nothing wrong with a chap crying.
My cinematic triggers are too numerous to mention, however 'An Affair to Remember' (Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr - will he see the wheelchair in time?) get's me every time (so does 'Terms of Endearment' how sad am I?)
