I Gather
I gather tulips in the sea
And whelks upon the shore
It helps me long to want to be
What I might be here for.
I round up cattle in the west
And stray dogs in the east
It helps me know what’s really best
About tinned peas.
I look for winnepegs in the hills
For germanies on the coast
It makes me feel so real and
Makes me long for tea and toast.
I search for hobnails in old boots
For purple fungi in young roots
For green illuminati in blue suits
For red mantillas playing flutes.
But never do I find the thing
That makes me want to dance and sing
The thing with wings and other things
That makes me want to do anything.
So I keep on searching like a snake
For mushrooms in the sky
And massive bits of chocolate cake
On plates left out to dry.
Don't envy me! Don't pity me!
We all must do what's best,
If it be diving in the sea
Or feathering our nest.
We all must do what we must do
To pass the tedious time,
If it be writing silly verse
Or reading Wittgenstein.
