A Conversation for Talking Point: What did you want to be when you grew up?
A pilot (not a pirate)

I wanted to fly an aeroplane. At junior school, I read books on flying. My heroes were Biggles, Amy Johnson, Amelia Erhardt, Baron von Richtofen, Sheila Scott. I wanted adventure (and really wild things). I was told - women do not fly, you can't.
And so I became - a bi-lingual secretary , a sales administrator, a conference organiser, a consumer adviser, an accident prevention officer.
The nearest I ever got to flying a plane was a half hour lesson given to me as a birthday present - which was absolutely marvelous!
I still have tremendous admiration for the wonderful women adventurers who set out to travel the world.
