A Conversation for Talking Point: What did you want to be when you grew up?

definitely not a teacher

I first decided to become a journalist at the age of 14 when I realised that the only things I was good at were spelling and reading. Initially my mother suggested that I become a teacher, but that thought horrified me. Then she suggested journalist. The idea took hold and I have been writing on and off for the last decade or so.

Finally, I decided to get some proper training (I had only done a cadetship) and am back at uni doing post graduate coursework in journalism. So far it has been rewarding and I've discovered that my journalistic "calling" is writing about the affect government decisions have on the lives of ordinary people.
