Quite without knowing the significance of the date, I pulled my unread copy of the subject book from my bookshelf late last week and finished it today. DNA tickled my funny bone like he did when I first read H2G2. For all the reasons you say and more, he is sorely missed and was taken away - wherever - too soon for my tastes.
Bless.

Fresh read! Um-humm, nothing says lovin' like something from the oven. Oh I do love the warmth and aroma of fresh read.
It has been stated elsewhere hereabouts that there will be an all-black production of HHGTTG presented at this year's Edinbra Fringe Festival. Then and only then can we say he is truly gone.
Large souls take longer to leave the bawdy. He will then re-materialise, instantly reincarnated as an innocent whale (his sins and burdens a bowl of peruvians) high above // and floating free, like verse.

*peruvians,
dyslexic spelling of petunias,
also intimating reference to the Nazca lines in Peru - those man made giant shapes visible only from a bird's eye view*
