A Conversation for Civilization - The Games

I used to really like Civ, although I never played any of its successors.
I remember one game where I was militarily dominant, and was just buying time with my one remaining opponent while the Alpha Centauri ship was ready. I built up a series of carriers as "stepping stones" across the ocean, and just lobbed the occasional nuke to keep the guy back in the stone age. Who'd have guessed I was predicting US foreign policy?

I remeber a game in Civ 2 where I'd sat quietley on my own island until about 1900, then launched a devestating fleet of carrier and transports carrying Stealth Bombers, fighter, Mec. Infantry and Howitzers. My opisiton didnt last very long.

I've recentley been playing lots of alpha centauri. The only problem is I can cane the AIs ass at any difficulty.

I don't like Alpha Centurai, I was playing it a couple of days ago. It looks terrible and the technologies mean nothing to me. My main strategy is technological superiority over everyone else, so it's good to keep track and make sense of what's going on.
Now CivIII on the other hand. I LOVE that game so damn much. I have a really unhealthy addiction to it.

I'm not a great fan of Civ 3 - the change to combat plays heel with my tactics - why do you have to move into the square of the unit you attacked? - and I dont like the ages system of technological development.
Also, playing the university in AC helps greatly with ruling over everyone else wiht advanced technology - maybe thats why its too easy.

What do you mean by 'the change to combat'?
If you don't use the mouse to attack, and just use the arrow keys or the keypad, then I don't think you do have to move into the square of your opponent you just defeated.
There's always been an ages system. Y'know, the exciting bit when your cities change appearance and go from mud huts to filthy industrial things. It's just that in CivIII it's better defined in the Scientific R&D menu (F6 key!).
I always go with Univeristy in AC. It's a bit dull. I don't like the military unit thing in AC either. The workshop is just annoying and the units look awful.
The storyline in AC isn't much cop either.

I found that you do have to move into the enemy units square after a sucsessful attack - I'll check though.
What I meant about the ages is I dont like the way you have to discover almost all the technologies in an age to get any in the next age. I liked the you-just-need-the-prequsistes thing in previous Civ game. Y'know, Ste, we really should finish this article.
Anyway, I thini I might give Civ 3 another chance soon.

And I still haven't played Civ3. Shame on me!
