(sorry for always going on about this... not griping, honest. smiley - winkeye
Is every party forevermore going to be in London? 'cos it'd be spiffing if I could go, and semi-promised to this time, but looking at the times... if I stayed til a reasonable time I wouldn't be home till at least 11. (ugh, late trains!) couldn't stay over, looked at this option for another envent and the cost was outrageous... are there plans to have parties in alternative locations? (btw. all the others I've seen announced, ie. Manchester, have also had logistical problems. A more middlish event would be ideal. I've tried to start my own once or twice, but they sank. smiley - sadface )

Other meet-ups are advertised here - <./>Community-Events</.>, but yes, the official meet-ups will be in London. That's were we are based, and we all live there.

If you want to arrange one closer to where you are, then we'll be happy to publicise it. And maybe even turn up. smiley - smiley

Hi Mandragora,

I'm chipping in because I've organised the previous Official Meets.

There are a few problems with us organising parties outside London.

* Most areas of Britain offer a fast train to London. So because of this London seems to be accessible to the *greatest* number of people. We've asked the community about this prior to previous meets, and they seem to agree that London is the most accessible place, so we've borne that in mind. We're always happy to review this; so please do bring it up as a possible option when we start discussing the next Winter meet-up.

* We have a limited party budget, and if the Beeb had to pay for hotel accommodation for all of the h2g2 staff, it'd eat into it. We'd rather spend the budget on beer/food for the commmunity than hotel bills for us lot! It only seems fair after all the work you lot put in! smiley - smiley

* It's also pretty tricky for us to set up meet-ups in a city that we're unfamiliar with. Linda and Abi have worked hard to check out the pubs and talked to the landlord/landladies about the facilities offered/menu options and so on. They've also had to take into account the daytime event; options if it rains and so on. Making arrangements in other locations in the UK might be quite difficult for them in another city.

So I hope that the explanation shows that we're not basing the decision of location for 'London-centric' reasons, we're organising the events in this way for purely practical logistic reasons. smiley - smiley

Hi Peta smiley - smiley, I was talking to Abi about much the same thing. As I said to her, I wouldn't expect the Editors to organise an alternative Meet that was outside their area. I've tried to organise (well, mentioned the possibility of) other events but they never came to owt, which is why I'm posting here.
Ta (I'll still try and attend future events tho.)

I was supprised at the last London meet, just how cheap the accomidation was....: And, no it wasn't rat-infested or anything, pretty clean actually... And cheaper than most of the hotels/boarding houses in this deadend of a hole where I live smiley - biggrinsmiley - smiley

'cheap' accommodation, for me, has to be equal to or less than 2 days' train fare. smiley - winkeye I doubt that exists.
