..though I don't know how well it would work...
We tried it with the last Manchester Meet...
(And I'd thought of it the night before Rupert's Birthday Party, but it was a little late then)
But there's a bit more warning this time...
Anyway... Would there be any interest in making a call on a mobile and passing the mobile around? There's lots of people going that I'd love to talk to, and maybe there's even some who feel the same about talking to me...?
Now, before you say, 'An overseas call? On a *mobile*?? Do you have any idea how much that would *cost*?!?'--I happen to know that there are phone cards for mobiles with very reasonable US rates. Ask 2legs--He bought a 5 pound card, and we talked, altogether, for over 3 hours (each time you connect, there's a charge). And there are people on the attending list that already have my phone number...

Hi Amy
Those calling cards are good, aren't they? One of the lecturers Ian works with managed to ring up a £700 phone bill in a hotel ringing home. This time his wife has bought him one of those cards!

Yeah well hotel phones are expensive, but even that was extreme.
I won't say which central London hotel it was, but when another colleague questioned his bill of £250 they reduced it substantially.

All very well, but would anyone be interested in calling here from the meet?

Oh, OK...
Kinda tired--stayed out too late for a night before a workday watching fireworks
But at least I brought the thread from the bottom, so it won't get buried as quickly

I see what you mean now. Amy lives in America and would like to come to the meet but can't but would like to be called from a mobile where everyone who wants to talk to her or who she wants to talk to clubs together for a card to pay for the call.
It might work. It would be fun to talk to jwf.

Well, since the only people that have posted here besides me are Abi and Trillian's Child *waves* (who I don't think I've talked to before?) maybe I should unbury the thread with a list of the people I was hoping would be interested... (Though maybe if I'd thought of a better title for this thread it would have been better)
Some of these folks I already have the phone numbers of, and vice versa, so I really could talk to them any weekend, but it'd be fun to hear from them from the meet (and of course one of them would be doing the actual dialing, likely) I think I'll list them first...
2legs
Light
Suz (OK, I know she doesn't like to talk on the phone...)
And those that don't have my number/I don't have theirs (and if you're not listed, don't feel hurt... I'm not fully awake atm...)
Abi
Ben
Also Ran
Croz
Galaxy Babe
Hammy
Metal Chicken
shazz
spimcoot (though he already said that he wouldn't go looking for the mobile, but if it went by him, he'd say hi)
'bell
UH
Clive
pheloxi
Looks like it would be a long call...
(And I had to go away from the computer in the middle of writing this, so if there's a posting sonce I started, I refuse to feel )

What a superb idea!!
The thing is that comes straight to mind, and excuse my penny pinchingness, but surely an easier way to work this would be for Any to phone England?
If there are those phone cards here, which I think I've seen, then surely there must be similar over there?
This way aswell, seeing as it's such a good idea, other people who want phone from abroad can?
The other idea, is, seeing as I'm more than likely to be taking my laptop along, maybe convincing the pub to let us borrow their phone line, hook in a webcam and a mic and use Yahoo Messageners' web video conferencing facilities? Hey, that is a good idea actually.

The phone card 2legs got last Fall, for calling from a mobile, was cheaper than the rate I can get for calling a regular phone in the UK. Calling a mobile in the UK costs me 4 times as much as calling a regular phone.
But I do remember seeing somewhere that long distance calls can be made over the internet to a normal phone for quite cheap... I think... My home computer could never handle anything like that (and I don't have a microphone anyway)

Don't worry Amy, Pastey and I are working on something. You Do have a home phone don't you, rather than a mobile?
Í'm a bit busy today, but I'll look into it in greater detail tomorrow

Shazz and I are working on something that may allow everyone to talk over the phone without costing much money...
Now, if you had speakers and a mic on your home computer it wouldn't cost a thing...
