A Conversation for Talking Point: Debt
Inflation to the rescue

Look at the scary debt-load you're carrying now compared to, say, 20 years ago - those of you who are too young: go and play with your Leggo for a few minutes. Then, you probably felt like an astronaut for coughing up the dough to make a down-payment on your house (never mind the mortgage, for a moment). Now you're probably shopping for a car in the same price range. If you live long enough, your current credit card balance will seem to shrink like a pimple at the beach.
Back from the Leggo box: Your student loan may seem like a burden now, but the gold watch they give you when you retire will be worth ten times as much.

Inflation to the rescue

How I agree! When I took out a mortgage, the house was valued at X pounds. Next year, when I finally pay it off, it will be worth between 3 and 4X pounds. My younger son's student debt three years ago was also (on paper) X pounds. When THAT's finally paid off X pounds probably won't pay for the celebration drinks.
The idea is to die owing the bank money.
