Hmm, I think miyazaki would be hurt at the idea of Studio Ghibli being obscure before the release of this movie...He was already a God in japan, and weren't to become well known in in the west until after the release of Porco Rosso, really...

The films that had put him 'over the top' so to speak, were Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and Kiki's Delivery Service, for what it's worth.
