CB is one of my favourite series.

In fact I recently got an import sub of the movie on DVD. It was fantastic.

A friend gave me the first two discs of Bebop and I owned the next four within 10 days. The series is simply awesome.

I like the music, but must confess that like a lot of the new 'retro-ish' type anime (Trigun springs instantly to mind), it really did nothing for me.

There is another thread about somewhere around here, surely?

I dunno. I really like the retro feeling Anime. Trigun is another that I really enjoy. Not as retro, but Gunsmith Cats is another that employs scenery and themes that many anime series do not. Most of the anime that I am familiar with either falls into the Mecha category (Gundam, Evangelion, Nadesico) or the Japan scene (Ah! My Godess, Akira, Bubblegum Crisis) The Japan based series (and yes I know that GUndam and Eva also fall into that) are the ones that are considered to be the basis of Anime culture, but I think that the feel of the series that are either set in the US (GSC) or have Old West themes (Trigun, Cowboy Bebop) is what I find appealing about them. As a result I think that Trigun and Bebop are among the best series out there. Spike Seigal and Vash the Stampede are among my favourite characters in *any* series. As much as I love Nadesico and Evangelion I cannot find much in common with Akito or Shinji (same voice actor for the english dub BTW). Vash is in an environment that is much like the desert that I grew up in. Spike is a bounty hunter like many who plied their trade int he US west, where I live. Perhaps it is a geographical thing. Perhaps people on the East Coast of the US would not get as much out of it as I do, much less someone in the UK.

I had no problems with the western theme of them, I just didn't click with them. Part of the problem was that there was no 'bigger story', like ythere is in EVA or, say, Giant Robo.

What you see is what you get with Cowboy BeBop, I think. That's why I watch Jackie Chan movies. I tend to watch anime for different reasons.

You could be right... I think that I empathise mostly with the setting of Trigun than the story. But the story in Bebop had me drooling to buy more.

The movie for Bebop is a strange one. Most of the OVAs for anime either try to tie up the series, or they ignore the last part of the series (Think Evangelion Death and Rebirth). The Bebop OVA was like a really long episode.

I think that I see what you mean about the bigger story aspect. Bebop was far more episodic than say Eva which is very serial. That may be part of why it is not more your type of anime.

Death and Rebirth was really Hideaki ASnno saying 'Look, we couldn't do it Tv the way we wanted'.

I mean, how much difference does it make to the plot of the series knowing that Asuka and Kaji did the nasty, a fact which even TOKYOTV presumably weren't happy with?

To be quite honest I was not impressed enough with Death to watch Rebirth. I am going to soon borrow End of Evangelion to see if it makes any more sense than the last two episodes of the series.

Hmm, you'll need to watch ReBirth as that is essentially episode 25 as Anno originally wanted to do it. Watching End on it's own is like watching 26 without the having seen what leads up to it- and it is vaguely important in this case...

End is only all the bits of Info they left out for one reason or another from episodes 1 thro' 24.

I don't know anything about Lupin III but I do know that I think that Spike is a fairly original character in the anime that I have seen.

I must say that Spike fairly rocks the casbah in my book though.

On a side note, I may be cosplaying Jet Black in an upcoming con somewhere. If this sad event occurs I will post pics on my site.

I just felt it was an interesting comparison, is all.

I don't see a lot in Cowboy Bebop but I do smiley - love Lupin - the first volume of the manga is a revelation.

Mind you Cowboy Bebop does appear to be about the best of the bunch on CNX - Outlaw Star is drivel of the highest order...

It's interesting that you think US settings are comforting. Myself, I find shows set in the US hilarious for the most part.

I remember watching Battle Atheletes Victory where the American contestant, Jesse, describes her sad life in the inner city.

She stole food to feed her sick sister, running from the store keepers who chased her with a broom. And I think, In the US, they'd be chasing her with a gun. Plus, two underaged girls without parents probably couldn't get away with living alone. All in all, I found the lack of familiarity with the American culture to be funny.

About Cowboy Beebop, I found its episodic nature off-putting. (The episodes vary greatly in style). I have seen about 4 episodes, and none of them seem to be the great ones that they talk about. It doesn't encourage me to want to watch more. They never drew me into the story.

Maybe someday I'll sit down and watch the whole thing, but I laugh at this show too. The black guy with the funny accent (In the Japanese). The odd space-hanger on Earth. Lots of little odd things that make it hard for me to take this one seriously.

I do really like Trigun though.

The Japanese take on western culture has always been a little odd - Gunsmith Cats is a prime example, but highly entertaining nonetheless.

Trigun wasd interesting, but not so interesting that I wanted to see more at the inflated prices for imported DVD's here in the UK. Though I shall probably still fork out for MKR and Serial Experiment:Lain at some point.

Anybody here seen Samurai Jack, Gennady Tartakovsky's follow up to Dexter and Powerpuff Girls - brilliant stuff...

Oh don't give up on Trigun.

The first two disks are fluff. Fun, but fluff.

The middle episodes are sorta cool and a bit angsty.

The later episodes are psychologically damaging and intense. Legato Bluesummers is one of the creepiest villians in any anime. :shiver:

The flashback scenes are scifi and sorta cool.(generation ships).
The last episode has the final gun battle. smiley - smiley
It was cheesy and serious and fun all at the same time. It also had a pretty good ending.

Of course, I was able to rent it so it was much cheaper to watch. I have noticed this box set go on sale from time to time, but I don't know if the region 2 version ever did.

I also loved how a character who spent almost every episode shooting people could get away with yelling LOVE AND PEACE and look sincere.
