"The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling idea: i.e. the class which is the ruling matirial force of society is at the same time the ruling intellectual force. The class which has the means of matirial production at it's disposal, has control at the same time over the means of mental production."
Karl marx; The German Ideology.

Whats your point?
Do you mean (or does Marx mean) that the ruling elite control thought to such an extent that we are inevitably forced to have beliefs that are compatible with the ruling elite remaining the ruling elite (we are literaly unable to concieve of an alternative reality), or do you mean that the ruling elite control the means of dissemination of ideas and information to such an extent that they are able to "crowd out" all ideas incompatible with their status, and so dictate that the "conventional wisdom" will be conducive to their continued rule?

Yeah, that notion of 'crowding out' is pretty much correct i think, and certainly in keeping with this chapters findings, which is why i mention the quote here.
What did you make of it?
