Entry: Adelaide, Australia - A697520
Author: Researcher 190048 - U190048

I felt that Adelaide has been highly under-represented in H2G2. These are the things that people need to know if they ever visit Adelaide, Australia. Fell free to make any improvements you want smiley - smiley

Hi there,

Just one little point that might make it a little easier to read...

I know the entry is on the subject of Adelaide, but in your writing I found that the word Adelaide itself was repeated far to many times..

It might scan a little better if you replaced a few of the 'Adelaide's with 'The City' or even just 'it'

Apart from that, very good little entry.

smiley - cheers

PS, noticed you're new around here, firstly welcome to H2G2 and have a slice of smiley - cake (or a smiley - ale if you prefer)... Another little pointer for you: If you put something on your personal space (even if it's just 'hello, I'll write something interesting later'), people can post conversations to your page and actually talk to you there.

That is a very fair comment. I felt that it could be annoying even as I was writing it.

G'day Researcher 190048 smiley - smiley

As Whisky said, if you add something to your personal space, people can drop by and say hello properly, and if you click on the 'Preferences' button you can change your name to something more personal smiley - smiley

I enjoyed your entry - a tip on footnotes - instead of writing (1) and then going to the bottom of the page to fill in the info, you can simply put the tag where you want your text (ie. "...Torens RiverDon't get your hopes up... It is actually more of a creek than a river. In places where the water is not dammed up, you can practically jump over it., and is...") - otherwise, a very well written and informative entry smiley - ok

If you have time, come and stop by the Australian and NZ researchers page (<./>A592049</.&gtsmiley - winkeye and say hello! smiley - biggrin

Well that was some effort. It is now somewhat revamped, and hopefully improved from earlier versions.

I notice that one problem at least will be that it is rather long now... Oh well...!

smiley - ok that's a good length smiley - smiley

If you click the 'edit my space' button on your page (click on 'my space' or your name to get there) you can change your introduction - it doesn't matter what you say, just as long as there's something there - that way people can come and talk to you!! smiley - biggrin

Hi, theMartian - welcome to h2g2! smiley - cheers

Good Entry! There's certainly no problem with the length. The general rule of thumb on h2g2 is to write up to 2,000 words per Entry, and you haven't exceeded that.

I'd suggest throwing in a couple of links now - first to that 'Wine Tasting In Adelaide' Entry, and then maybe one or two to useful sites outside h2g2. The city council site on http://www.adelaidecitycouncil.com/ might be a good one to start with. There's a help page on how to do links in GuideML on A184763.

BTW, did you know that we have special Martian Smileys on h2g2? Here they are: smiley - martianfrownsmiley - martiansmilesmiley - mars . Just click on any of them if you want to know how to use them! smiley - ok

Well here's one for you to get started. This one is of particular interest, as the Adelaide Fringe Festival starts today (Yay for anyone lucky enough to be in Adelaide!!) and continues for about the next month.

Tonight there is a huge street party in Rundle street which will closed of to traffic as thousands of people descend on the area. All the performers turn up and just start entertaining people in the street. It is also the time where every freak and bogan in the state suddenly pop up from out of nowhere, so it can be quite entertaining.

The actual Adelaide Festivsl (as opposed to the Fringe Festival) starts next week. That is the more boring sober part where rich people get dressed up in Tux's and pretend to understand art. The Fringe is much more fun (and MUCH bigger in fact) than the festival.

I will add some other links when I have time

Yep, a guide-worthy entry! smiley - smiley

Some points one could add to flesh the thing out a little more (though that's not really necessary)
* a link to A352540 - Onkaparinga River, Adelaide, South Australia
* seeing that you mention German settlers you could chuck in a line about the Barossa Valley (which would tie in well with the mentioned SA wines) and places like Seppeltsfield or Kaiserstuhl.

Anyway, great entry!

I think there is a whole article that needs to be done on the water in Adelaide. Adelaide water (which has a lovely vibrant flavour to anyone who has to drink it on a regualr basis was in times pat (and maybe still - I don't know) one of only two locations where ships refused to take aboard water. (I think from memory the only other location was Dubai?) Also, it was outside some U.N guidlines for drinking water or something. There is also the massive length of the Mannum-Adelaide pipeline. As SA is the dryest state, I definately think there is an article or two there somewhere, but it could be a part of a larger article, water conservation in Australia. If anyone knows of an article like this I would link to it. Other than that, I would refer to it, but I can't quite work out an appropriate seg-way.

In my article I have tried (probably unsuccessfully) to confine the subject of the article to Adelaide proper (i.e the CBD square). It might be your advice that this is unnecessary or misguided. However, though I would like to refer to the German settlements, which are all over the place - Barossa, Handorf, Nuriootpa to mention just a few, I'm not sure they would fit the geographical focus of the article.

I am willing to be persuaded otherwise though...

Oh, no. Don't let me talk you into something... Keep it to Adelaide proper. smiley - smiley As I said, the entry is good as it is. I realise that one could extend each entry ad infinitum... smiley - erm

... but not this time please!

It's time to open the smiley - bubbly now, as your entry has been recommended for inclusion into the Edited Guide!

You can track its movement through the process by keeping an eye on the ComingUp page, which will show that it's going out to a SubEd (BTW, that's a *copy* of your entry, and it is 'owned' by said SubEd - thus you can contact him/her in case of any problems), next thing to happen is that the in-house team do some fine polishing etc. After that, it'll spend some time on your space with a 'pending' remark next to it. Then you'll know that it's not too long until you can find it on the h2g2 frontpage!

As I said: smiley - bubbly time! smiley - cheers

Just a little point of contention...and I'm rather iffy about this, being that I'm an expat Adelaidian...

The river is actually called the Torrens river. Double 'r'. Otherwise it's a great entry, and tis indeed good to see some more contributions about dear ol' Adelaide in H2G2.

Heck, you've mebbe even convinced me to write one of my own one day. smiley - laugh

Congratulations!!!

Aaaaand, (sorry to be picky, but I reeeeeeally don' like Victoria *G*) South Australia is actually physically larger than Victoria. Unless you're talking about population wise. Heck, SA's almost bigger than NSW and Vic put together. Just look at the borders on the map!
