Hi, Bluebottle!
I think that you should mention Shrove Tuesday being the last day before the beginning of Lent at an earlier point in the entry, because not everyone will know that.
Don't the words 'shrove' and 'shroven' come from the old forms of 'to shrive' and 'to be shriven', from the days when people confessed their sins in preparation for Lent? I assume that people singing the Shroven song were singing that their sins had been forgiven (so presumably they now deserved some charity).

Hi Bluebottle,
I was going to make the point Azara has just made about shriving.
I was taught that the reasons pancakes were made was to use up the eggs, milk and butter in preparation for Lent.
It might help if you said just after the first bit about the Americans having taken over some of the traditions in Halloween that you would explain that later.
Two typos ' centureies' should be 'centuries'.
'devolped' should be 'developed'.

So that's where we got egging houses from. The same reason to If they didn't cough up the candy we'd Shrov 'em. Not to take anything awayfrom the Entry. Ilked it. Very informative.

Nice one BB.
Of course, you know that this entry will force me to do a write-up about Pennsylvania's day-before-Ash Wednesday tradition - Fasnacht Day.

Hi, Bluebottle!
I see this has been sent to a Sub-Editor, so congratulations!
I think your changes may have been too late, if the earlier version had already been copied for the Sub-Editor.
Have some , anyway!

I really am not interested in what happens in America on any day. What I do want is our own Isle of Wight Dialect
and all the local songs and music is still available, and being preserved. For what we have no one can take away, even thou many have tried by making us speak, as they called it properly. I say the way we speak is proper
Which takes me back to my request the songs and the music
as well as the dialect. Please let me know by posting a
reply here.
