NUCLEAR POWER
Created | Updated Mar 7, 2002
At the moment I am doing some coursework on Nuclear waste. I would like some feedback from you as to what your opinions are on this subject.
My title is Nuclear waste and its effect on the local community. Here is some information on this subject:
At the moment Sellafield is recycling Europe's nuclear waste. It is changing the spent fuel (it has been used once) into more energy. This is meant to reduce the amount of waste produced by nuclear energy production. It is 3% at the moment. That is still radioactive, and it is still dangerous for over 2,500 years. There is no safe way to dispose of this at the moment.
Sellafield is in the news at the moment. It has been pumping radioactive isotopes into the Irish sea. The Irish government want to see a reform of this policy and Sellafield shut down.
In the newspapers after September 11th there were reports in the newspapers of the effect another attack on Sellafield could have. I have found out more about this report, and it says that if a similar incident took place (it could be accidental) then there would be a 200 to 700 km exclusion zone. This Is the majority of the U.k at best, and at worst, making all the U.k and Ireland uninhabitable, are you happy with this?
I am looking at the social, environmental, economical, and the health and safety aspects of nuclear waste.
What are your view on this?
Do think its a good idea?
What are the alternatives?
It kinda goes into the whole problem of nuclear power a bit, but my projects not really focused on that. I do need some general stuff as well though, but not too much. For any of you who think I'm cheating a bit, well I'm not. Think of it as a questionnaire, if you will. Well its my alternative. I just need to know what you people think about it.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Once I have completed my project I might put some of it in the guide, but I don't know if I'm allowed to.
There is a lot of controversial subject, and so I'm sure that there are a lot of views out there. Please help my project along, thanks. feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you want to.
