My osteopath tells me it can be transmitted sexually and by contact with underwear. I don't think it's highly contagious. She advised me either to boil the underwear (not practical with today's materials) or to wash it with a couple of drops of Tea Tree Oil. If you don't do that, it can get recycled.

I'll add something in if you think it's necessary.

Hi Kid!

You're a bit off line in this thread, I think, but welcome nonetheless. Note to Mods - please bear with me on this one.

As far as I can see, there isn't a club for Canadians, although there are for various groups of Americans. Why not start one yourself via the h2g2 Post.

See http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A616718 for details.

Good luck!smiley - rose

It might be worth mentioning that the yoghurt should be eaten, and applied topically. Many people seem to know that yoghurt helps but don't know what to do with it!

Candida is the name of the genus of yeast (it is a commensal, ie. naturally present in the mucous membranes, GI tract, vagina and on the skin of healthy people). Candida albicans is the fungus that usually causes infections (ie. it is a pathogen). The infections are commonly; nappy rash, intertrigo (in armpits, under breasts, between toes), vaginitis and thrush (vaginal and oral). According to my medical dictionary, the systemic infections rather than topical infections only occur in people with a severely weakened immune system such as those on chemotherapy or with HIV.

I don't know if this is too much detail that you don't wish to go into, but Candida is kept under control in the vagina because of its acidity. A change in pH balance can cause it to grow. I feel it's important under treatment to mention that as thrush is an STD, if one partner has it, both need to be treated to prevent re-infection.

Would a brief description of the fungus be appropriate? It might also be worth mentioning that thrush is not always visible on men but they can still be infectious.

Hope some of this is of some use smiley - smiley

I'll certainly add the bit about yoghurt. I was thinking of specifying that it should be 'live' and I would advise organic.

The immune system can also be drastically lowered by stress, which can lead to non sexually transmitted candida. I'm told that it can be passed on through underwear being washed with other clothing (which is why the advice is to wash laundry with a couple of drops of Tea Tree Oil) and it is through the growth hormone. I looked up a couple of sites and found additional material, but I thought it was too academic for this entry. Another way to treat underwear is to microwave it, believe it or not!

Apparently candida lines the gut, which leads to malabsorption. Psyllium husks scrub them off and yoghurt or bifidus encourages the growth of the normal gut flora.

My osteopath tells me that 1 in 4 of the people she treats have candida severe enough to warrant treatment. That's not to say that 1 in 4 of the population have it! I suspect that systemic candida is more common than your dictionary suggests.

I'll give some more thought to the other suggestions - thanks for them!smiley - hug

I have a friend who has just come through several months of treatment and she looks wonderful. Clear skin, lost weight, shinier hair. It is a slog to change lifestyle like this, but she looks great on it.

I've made a further amendment to the entry. I also put in a really good link yesterday, which has links to lots of other websites.

I also spoke to my homeopath, who tells me that stress is a very common cause of systemic candida.

smiley - ok I don't know whether you've changed the entry much or whether I've just had more sleep, but it seems to read better now smiley - shrug Another obvious point, but perhaps one that's not always obvious to everyone: if yoghurt is going to be applied topically, as well as being live, natural yoghurt it should also be plain. As I finished reading your entry I suddenly had visions of strawberry pips smiley - yikes

smiley - yikes what a horrible thought! Didn't I specify plain? I certainly had it in mind. Hurries to make sure smiley - run.

Amended. Of course, fruit yoghurt has fruit in it and therefore fructose, which would not be allowed. However this makes it absolutely 'plain'. Thanks.smiley - cheers
