I've heard of parts of the United States that have declared themselves independent. Louis Theroux visited one in the mountains, possibly Montana.
I think the essential point of declaring yourself independent is that you don't pay any taxes to the government, and don't get any benefits from the government. Has the Confederacy of Awesome been approached by the US tax inspectors yet? I suspect that imprisonment is the normal reaction of the state to what it considers its members not paying tax.

we havent seeing as were small enough not to be noticed by the US government.
