A Conversation for Discussions Relating to the Lifetime Ban of Quincy

Oh no, not again...

Jimi X

I'm finding myself in agreement with the bowl of petunias at this point. Though I'm not quite worked up to the Cathedral of Hate stage yet.

When does this end?

Why?
Really, why do we need to keep going through this?

Me too.

>Though I'm not quite worked up to the Cathedral of Hate stage yet.

Good. Nor me.

>When does this end?

Who knows?

>Why?

Who *cares*?

>Really, why do we need to keep going through this?

We need to keep going through this because, due to the nature of the site, when the Editors ban someone, they have to depend solely on the banned person's sense of honour or shame not to come back. This is obviously rather heavily dependent on the banned person *having* a sense of honour or shame in the first place, and is therefore obviously imperfect.

We have to keep going through this for the same reason we have to spend money on anti-virus software and locks on our cars - some people refuse to play by the rules, and will persist in doing so unless prevented from doing so forcibly. Unfortunately, without making it a *lot* harder to get an account here, there's just no way to prevent this sort of thing from happening again and again and again.

All of this presupposes that "Quincy" is in fact LeKZ's second attempt to obtain an account at h2g2 by deception. This has not been proven, and I hope, I *really* hope, Quincy actually turns out to be what he said he was, for many reasons. We'll see.

H.

I've been trying to stay away from the whole LeKZ issue... I *do* know a sticky spot when I see one...

I hope this is just a matter of mistaken identity, so we can all go back to 'normal'... If this keeps up, I may start staying away from newbies--I started talking with 'Silent Lucidity' before she was found to be LeKZ, and I don't want to go through that again... There's lots of old researchers I don't know yet...

What's happened to the infallible IP trace??

On a dialup connection such as Madasafish Classic, the original Freeserve, etc, using a phone line, the IP addresses are controlled by the ISP and allocated on a per-session basis - they change...

7rob7 - Quincy is using an 'untraceable' account. Might mean an IP redirect service, which means it's not traceable until you send the lawyers in. I've suggested here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F55683?thread=161006&post=1641382#p1641382 how the House Rules might be changed to close this loophole. -Xanthia

Since I use Hotmail (web-based) exclusively for all my internet shenanigans, does that mean I, too, have an 'untraceable account'?

No - it's not about email. Your IP address is a string of numbers like 383.583.238.294 or something that is the 'address' of your computer - so that your requests for webpages can be sent back to you. If you dial into the Net via a phone line, you probably change IP every session. With ADSL, LAN connections and other things, it may remain constant. Hence, the little b*gg*r who keeps trying to hack into my home system can only be traced to his ISP, while he has to find my IP address by me being logged onto a service like Messenger. h2g2 won't allow them to, though. It's nice like that.

I'd just like to echo Jimi's statement once more.

Having been 'offsite' for some time, I wasn't aware that there was *still* grief and fallout over all this LeKZ business.

I cannot pretend to know half of what's going on, so I shall not make comment.
