I like getting the slow boat back home if time's no object. It's a few hours of not having to do anything, with the normal affairs of life suspended for a while. You don't really have much to do but relax.
Louis MacNeice likened it to a kind of interregnum, betwixt and between one thing and another.

At least it was a nice smooth crossing - that old Larne-Stranraer stretch of the Irish Sea can be pretty choppy at times!

oh ferry toilet doors - in fact all ferry doors - are horribly noisy. My days of ferrying without a cabin are long over though, i'm way too old for that (and usually the only ferry I go on is from Rotterdam to Hull - if I can't get a cabin, I don't go)
