Thanks for that. I think I understand now. Basically means moderation has pretty much lost any detectable sense of humour, doesn't it?

Or does it? See the Guide entry on Self Reference.

Mikey the Humming Mouse - A3938628 Learn More About the Edited Guide!

Actually, back when moderation very first started on h2g2, the topic of writing posts/entries/personal spaces to look like they had been moderated came up. I believe the response from the italics was that this would generally be considered rude/antisocial behavior. The idea was that moderation causes enough problems without someone messing with people's minds regarding whether or not something has been moderated.

Yes, agcB, I have received an explanation. I'd like to give further details, but the email has a legal confidentiality disclaimer on it. Sorry.

Does this mean that people are legally prohibited from talking about whatever problems they're having with moderation?

I'd find that rather problematic....

Lucinda. If the email you received was addressed to someone else, or clearly meant for someone else, the disclaimer prevents you from revealing its contents.

If you are the correct recipient, you are at liberty to share its contents if you so wish. The BBC must protect your privacy as a private individual, and cannot reveal contents of emails you send to it. You, as the originator, can reveal contents of said emails at your discretion.

The BBC, as an organisation, does not enjoy a similar right to privacy as far as I know. Anything a BBC employee, in their professional capacity, sends to you in an email can be made public by you if you wish. This does not extend to copyrighted material. However, emails sent by BBC employees are not copyrighted works of the BBC, and are not marked as such.

Make of that what you like...

H.

Not quite, but nice try! Note to Moderators: I am not laughing at you, please don't moderate me.

I amended the text surrounding the controversial link, which was on my space all through the weekend (see above, Posting 450), and within thirty minutes the page had been moderated. When I noticed, I amended the text on my space, by copying the "You Have Been Moderated" message to the GuideML. [My Fenny-at-work space has always been an almomst empty space, so I wasn't replacing any text with the message.]

I didn't realise this would also break the House Rules [http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/HouseRules] in some way, but it obviously has. Hence the rather silly message above, brought on by hysteria and too many Moderation Emails.

Just one question: *is* it offensive, to browse to someone's site, and see some words of warning decorating their site?

I've just read the backlog I missed while posting the message above. Thanks to all.

Thank you Mikey, I didn't realise my posting constituted "rude/antisocial behavior", or I wouldn't have done it.

Thanks to HVL, for sharing my sense of the ridiculous.

Thanks to Grief, and I assure you I'm not a mindcontroller, just a precog... smiley - smiley

Thanks to everyone else, for taking an interest...

["And I'd also like to thank my mother and father, who couldn't be here with us tonight, and my agent, without whom none of this...." Shut up, Fenny!]

Hoping some of the above made sense...

Hoovooloo, THAT WAS NO JOKE!!! Since when does the 'yikes' smiley indicate humour? If it does, then what smiley is it that indicates 'shock and dismay'? I'm glad Fenny does not take offense, *BUT I DO!!!* I posted that as a reflex action, I was aghast and apalled at the mere suggestion that Fenchurch might be messing with people's minds! It is not a subject *I* would joke about and *I* want that posting gone! The moderators just notified me that they are not going to remove it, though! Figures! But truly, it horrifies me to see it there!

Maybe I'm still stuck in the 'zero sense of humour' mode... But it's just not *on* to talk frivolously about stuff like that! I did not think about what I was doing, truly!

Sorry HVL, but you have this one wrong - confidential material is not allowed on h2g2 - check out the moderation guidelines - and italic emails are now confidential. This has come up before with regards to the posts of italics, and the guidance then was that they were not to be reposted or anything. Insofar as I recall, anyway.

Normally I'd paraphrase the email and hope for forbearance on the part of the italics. Due to the contents of that email, however, I am not willing to take that risk.

In other news, the apparent similarity between the acronyms PTB and PHB is entirely co-incidental. Allegations that Mark is planning on growing his beard in two tufts on either side of his chin are unfounded and totally true.

Just in case anyone has any doubt, let me make it clear that *I* did not think that Fenny was messing with my mind (or anyone else's, for that matter). I was simply paraphrasing the earlier logic which had been used to explain why it was considered bad form to write a post or edit an entry to make it appear to be moderated when it hadn't.

Well, I'm stupid enough to paraphrase. Sue me.

As I understand it, the people who make these decisions feel that 'The Forum That Dare Not Speak Its Name' is all the same things that the XXX'd post is, and so gets the same treatment.

Answer to Mikey: smiley - wow I'm generating controversy!

I didn't think you were accusing me, I promise! I understood that it was just a point you were making. I don't think you aimed that "anyone" at me; however, I want everyone to know my feelings (...isn't that what got me into trouble in the first place?)

Oh, well, I've got nothing to hide!

Interesting. Let me see if I've got this straight...

The only way to ask why something got censored... sorry, moderated, is via email. As the sender of the email, we are at liberty to make the contents of that email public.

The only response we will receive to any questions on why something got umm... moderated, will be by email. We may, as the recipient of that email, we may NOT make the contents of that email public.

Public discussion relating to why an item got moderated will no longer involve the moderators.

Because there are to be no open, public explanations on what, exactly, got an item moderated, researchers will not be able to review such an explanation, thereby avoiding asking a question that has already been answered.

This will result in the PTB spending less time on moderation-related issues.

This has nothing to do with any discussion sites off h2g2.

This is unrelated to the final warning I received, via email (while composing this post), not to place any information relating to one particular such discussion site.

That about sum it up?

Ooh! Wow! NBY - you're getting them sooner than me! That's not fair! I want one too!

I'm referring, of course, to your emailed warning "not to place any information relating to one particular such discussion site" - still waiting.

smiley - erm

I'm also concerned by the fact of my hidden - sorry, moderated - Fenny@work-space. At the risk of sounding subversive, I want to make plain *again* that I only did what I did in order to *avoid* being underhanded. I was moderated out following this, which suggests that I would have been better *not* staying true to my own ethics, and *not* owning up to contraband.

I hope no one thinks that is subversive or mind controlling. I'm pretty tired, now, and I'm not sure how much sense I'm making!

Aww, Fenny, we love you! smiley - hug

This situation is seriously f****d up. I'm sorry for swearing, but no other word could accurately convey my true opinion.

I'm yet to receive a warning, but I'm yet to receive an explanation as to why one email address is any different to others.

[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]

I can post all of these (please, feel free to contact me!) but a certain other email account that I created is not suitable. I don't understand, but my questions have gone unanswered.

I wish the Italics would start giving a s**t about legitimate concerns instead of ignoring the community and locking themselves in the towers with earphones in to drown out the public.

To hell with this place.
