A Conversation for h2g2 and the 2010 General Election

S just how does this work, then?

I've got a feeling I've got some stuff muddled.

I've not had the opportunity to vote that often. Local elections I understand. However, when it comes to a general I thought that you voted for the party, not the candidate.
I do remember having to once place three votes - one for a local candidate, one as an MEP, and one for the overall vote.

How do these all fit together? Have I got the whole thing rather wrong?

So it's likely that I got confused once, then.

That makes a lot more sense - I did always wonder how it fitted together, when I voted for one candidate at a local level but a different party at national (I liked the candidate but not the rest of the party at the time). I must have got it muddled with the MEP vote.

Damn. I always thought I understood what was going on! smiley - doh Silly Vip.

Thanks for sorting me straight. Now I know that the local one determines the fate of the national, I'll have to change the way I vote. smiley - sigh

Mrs Zen

Actually, didn't the Scots have a mix of methods for some of their elections?

I seem to remember that if you were voting there you had the normal system (candidate affiliated to a party) for the parliamentary elections and some form of PR/Transferable Vote for .... some other elections.
