Thanks for that posting.

The reason they cut the corpus calosum (commissurectomy) in severe eplilepsy was to stop the fit from spreading into the other half of the brain. In epilepsy the fit, or rather disordered firing of neurons, starts at one point (sometimes the site of a previous injury, tumour etc.) and triggers the cells near it. This uncontrolled neuron activity spreads throughout the brain.

I think I can remember hearing somewhere that on average the corpus calosum is larger in women than men. I've no idea why, but perhaps this is why women can't tell their left from their right.
