Indeed.
If this had been a DW story then at the point that the Doctor had got into floor 13 and given the 456 a chance to release the kids and leg it, he would have either sonic'd the airlock as presumably our atmosphere is poisonous to them or sonic'd the atmosphere generator to do much the same, and probably managed to get said generator zapped back to whereever they came from killing them as well a la Sontaran Strategem.

Good point about the air and the ir lock. You'd think they could've remote opened the air lock and perhaps as the two types of air mixed, it's create a balance they couldn't cope with. Definately needed the sonic screwdriver there.

Hmmmm, sonic screwdriver aside, just why did the *return signal* to the 456 work, other than "hurting them"? So what if they'd fled, what was to stop them from zapping us all on the way out? That they just ran screaming didn't make huge sense to me. Did we kill them all or what? One of the imponderables, I suppose.
Really good SF though; really a very topical story, about government complicity and troops going against the people they were trained to protect. It was especially compelling, particularly seeing the rerun of all episodes back to back on Sunday.
I'm thinking that was the end of TW, though. If Jack comes back, having found himself "another life", I don't think he would have the same drive to protect humanity, that he'd picked up from the Dr. Just my .

The excellent "TV Tropes" website (the link to which I'll provide at the bottom of this post" which deconstructs common tropes in popular media calls this kind of thing "fridge logic". Supposedly, this comes a comment by Alfred Hitchcock (I think) who said that a viewer will watch a film and only realise that certain things don't make sense or aren't properly explained when he goes to the fridge to get another beer after the film's finished at which point, from the storytelling point of view, it doesn't really matter.
I think one of the reasons so much TV irritates me is that I don't seem to have "fridge logic"; if there's a plot hole I spot it pretty quickly (hence my sitting through the first series of 'Torchwood' and much of the second feeling like throwing things at the screen as the latest big dumb plothole hoved blatantly into view).

yup
"is it wrong that "Tarrentino" and "Torchwood" just floated through my head in close succession? "
Probably. Almost as wrong as when 'Tarantino and CSI' floated through someone's head. (Yeah, I know some loved it, I didn't )

I like the "fridge-logic" concept and it's so true
Not that I'm one to defend plot holes (I'm too uncomfortable in confined spaces to be found plotholing) but the 465 gave the specs for their enclosure on floor 13 so I suspect they'd prepared for some eventualities (bulletproof glass being one.)

In terms of cinematography they're brilliant... not the best plots though

I can certainly see that the format and style will be copied and used toinspire other works. It did work well for me, although I've not been tempted to rewatch it just yet. But then that is usual for me, I need to forget large amounts of any show to be able to rewatch it otherwise I just find it boring cos of all the padding.

Suppose there are lots of things in film and tv that inspire other things.
Always find it interesting to look for the links between shows made by that same people, like Star Wars and Indiana Jones or in Dr Who and Torchwood. Can be great to see all the little references and props and stuff that are used in both.
