I loved it, but then I always knew I would. It just ticked all the requisite boxes.
Not sure what the Who connection is, though. Apart from Sylvester McCoy, that is.

'Superb' is I think the word smiley - winkeye

And Sylvester McCoy really suits having bird poo in his hair.

Connections between The Hobbit and Dr Who other than Sylvester McCoy?
Well - The Hobbit was written by JRR Tolkein who was friends with CS Lewis who died the day before the first episode of Dr Who was broadcast. Does that count?
Personally I really enjoyed the character of Radagast.

Well, if we're going with tenuous connections, there's the Moffat-Sherlock-Freeman/Cumberbatch link. Moffat also connects via Tintin: he worked on the script for the first one, and Peter Jackson produced it, as well as directing the upcoming second one.
More directly, now that I come to thin of it, Sir Ian McKellen was in The Hobbit as well as the recent DW Christmas Special.

"A new series of Doctor Who stories is set to be published monthly to celebrate the 50th anniversary year of the hit television programme.

The 11 tales, known as "eshorts", will each be written by a well-known children's author.

Each story will feature one of the various regenerations of the Doctor, starting with William Hartnell, who played the character from 1963-1966.

A paperback of the stories will be published by Puffin in November.

"Colfer’s Doctor jumps off a building, muses on Hogwarts, Marmite and ******his dislike of Blake’s 7******"

I *knew* there was something wrong about Hartnell's Dr...not liking B7...just because the Liberator looks cooler than his TARDIS.

Whilst watching The Hobbit, every time Gandalf said "Run", I thought about Doctor Who.

For the record, it was the McCoy link I was thinking of. Took me a while to recognise him though.

Saw him not too long ago in The Mikado also...

I did not recognise him as radergast - until someone told me then I googled the image and only then did I recognise him.

It took me a while to recognize him too, although I felt sure he was familiar as soon as I saw him.

Was giving some thought this evening to theme music.

I decided to give the 2012 christmas special 'nebula who' opening another listen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QGbsNIZ-uo

I like the visuals, but the music once the 'oooweeeeeoooo' kicks in feels familiar but the duh-duh-dumm feels a bit...well ....flat.

so I began a trawl backwards ...

2008-2010 has arguably the best base-line and has more horns doing more but it has lost something in the multiplying for me. It's very good make no mistake but....

I still reckon, 2005 - 2007 is my favourite. I dunno, there's just *something* about the (lonely) horn in the initial (more raspy and discordant) thump that gives me tingles, like a cavalry of one coming over the hill to the rescue..... better drums too.....

So my fellow whovians, which Dr Who theme is your Doctor?*

*inspired by this moment of zen...

David Bradley is to play William Hartnell in the Mark Gatiss penned docu-drama "An Adventure in Space and Time". One of the few confirmed 50th anniversary events that we know of.

The latest I'm hearing is that they have multiple things planned to mark the anniversary. Now that I know this, I'm satisfied to wait and see what they are.
