As a linguist, I can see that you're looking at language too logically. Language isn't about logic, it's about usage. The same argument dogs the double negative debate. If I aint done nothin', what have I done?

It's an interesting point to make (a bit like PIN Number), but you could say that it does have a use - even if it logically isn't neccessary.
