I spent this summer travelling around Europe and on this day I went to sleep in Vienna and woke up in Venice (night-trains rock) Just pulling into Venice's station and seeing the sea for the first time in a month, smelling the salt air. Then I walk out of the train station and see the canals rather than some ugly, busy road I just knew this place was like nowhere on Earth. I caught a traghetto to the youth hostel to find it didn't open for 2 hours so I just sat on my bergen and absorbed the atmosphere. Then I got talking to a group of English girls, the first Brits I'd met since I left London Waterloo, and an American guy. We had lunch together and got our beds in the hostel. After a quick shower (night-trains are sweaty) the 6 of us went exploring. Started with Piazza San Marco which was packed and full of pidgeons and then we just wandered the streets and found an Irish pub. Night fell and we went searching for food and we found this pleasant pizzeria in the Dosurduro, right on the canal. It was so beautiful. Then we went looking for the traghetto point back to the hostel, got lost, found a place that sells the best gellati in the world and eventually located the Piazza San Marco which at night time, when both tourists and pidgeons are asleep is magical, and then we caught the traghetto back. We went inside, bought drinks and took them outside to drink on the canalside, looking over to the main islands of Venice, with our feet just dipping in the water. Then I went to bed. Perfect
