A Conversation for Talking Point: Is The Movie Ever Better Than The Book?

Mary Poppins

Despite Dick Van Dyck's awful Mockney accent, Mary Poppins is a joy to watch, even after a multitude of viewings. Does anyone still read the book? Does anyone still know there was a book?

It's been a few years since I saw it, and didn't, until now, know there was a book. Another movie which I liked and didn't know there was a book until after the watch, was "Practical Magic". I can't now recall whom the author was, but while the book was alright it doesn't compare with the movie which I felt was great. Not a re-read but definately a watch again and again.

I didn't know there was a book of Mary Poppins! It doesn't seem like it would really work. I mean, obviously it must have done, because the book came first! Is the book good? Is the film quite different? How intriguing....

I've never actually held a copy of the book, but from what I've learned from a reviewer whom I respect it's exceptionally mean spirited and at times racist. One has to wonder why Mr. Disney developed such a special love of the book.
