Gain is ad software that gives U adds specifically for you.

Oh that stuff. It's not built into Windows XP, but it can be a real nuisance to get rid of. We had a bad case of it on one of our office computers - I was able to clear it out by getting rid of the PC and replacing it with a Mac. Works every time.

I use Ad Aware to remove this stuff. It's free and it works well.
