It's mostly to do with how it's made I guess. Beer/ale is darker and heavier, while lager is light and fizzy

I'd just thought lager was a form of beer. Like beer is the generic umbrella term and things like ale or lager are forms. Like there's "wine" with red, white, rose, etc.
