Just to say that I am very surprised that, to date, no one seems to have commented on the stangest thing about Belgium or Belgians, which is that the men all wear loud jackets of a colour that can be seen elsewhere only on some German cars. Lime green and orange seem to predominate more than one might expect (ie not at all).

To say that all men in Belgium wear those jackets is an incredible overstatement. Indeed some do but they have a perfectly logic reason for it (or at least they think they do) which is this:
Because Belgium is considered a country whithout a proper culture the Belgian younsters have created social gangs (like in America but usualy not so violent ones). One of those gangs are called Johny's or Ronny's (the reason why they are called like that is a complete mystery) and those guys seem to like wearing those jackets. Why? First of all because it makes them flashy, people notice them that way (which is very safe in traffic but pretty stupid elsewhere). The second reason is that some girls seem to like them (it has the effect of a peacock's tail, at least to girls with the brain the size of a peacock; and because those girls all seem to look like supermodels the boys are incredibly eager to get their hands on them). The third reason is that the men who wear those flashy jackets are themselfs so stupid that they just don't know why they wear them.

There are off course a whole bunch of other reasons but they are so mind-bogglingly stupid nobody cares to talk or write about them.

I probably haven't made you any wiser but then again i am an inhabitant of Belgium myself so that explanes everything!

Where abouts in Belgium are you from?? French or Dutch?

I noticed this too. So it isn't just the British who have a Europe-woide reputation for being crap dressers... are loudly-coloured jackets the Belgian male equivalent of chav culture, like shellsuits or Burberry?
