Probably the Beat Café...
Joe's staying in Abingdon, which is 6 miles South... (More specifically, my spareroom)

I'm staying in Oxford, but not for the night - this time I live close enough to stay late but still get back to my house to sleep!

Where is the Beat Cafe? Is that a definite plan? What time will people be meeting there?
I will also live quite near and will be going home after...

I don't know Oxford at all, and am obviously going to get hopelessly lost.
Better stick with the plan of arriving at the station at whatever time it says up there, and find out about getting a train back on Saturday. So long as someone will push me out the pub at the appropriate time, or I will miss it.

Here's a tip: don't suddenly decide to catch a completely different train to the one on your ticket.

Yeah; I hope they are going to get the Flat Cap and Muffler Autum Raddish in Leeds up and going for the beginning of september, I should be able to make that as long as it don't impinge on the few days round the eigth of teh month; friends wedding and he is the same age as me I ain't ever going to get old/sensible/something?

$u$ Posted Aug 8, 2001
...but sensible/married/something is definitely best avoided.
Unfortunately, getting on the wrong train is my speciality. And that's without visiting the pub first.

No certainly not. Not implying. Just advising against.
I have some accom leads to follow up, if anyone lurking with intent (of possibly coming to Oxford) is interested, I'll let you know.

Two questions...
1)Whereabouts is this pub we're going to (so secret, it still doesn't say on the meet page two days prior!), and
2)Is St George's Place (Square?) in the vicinity of St George's Tower, cos I can't find the former on my map.
3)Why didn't someone tell me there's an ice rink?! *okay, so that's three questions... wanna make something of it? ...picks up laser gun...*

Assuming the pub isn't changed from the Beat Café, it's in Little Clarendon Street... from the centre of Oxford (Where Waterstones is), you walk down St. Giles Street (big fat wide street with carparkingon either side... you should go past Martyr's memorial and a road on your left that has the Ashmolean and the Randolf on it, but don't turn down here)... going down the left handside of broad street, the road starts to divide into banbury road on the right, and something else on the left(and there's a church in the middle.).
Either side of the church, there's (left) an alley (This has G&D's and the Beat Café in it) and (right, about 100m on the otherside of the road) a road (that's bollarded off, so traffic can't get in, I think) a road that has the Nuclear and Astrophysics lab on the corner (big ugly concrete building). Down the road is the uni park (The grassy looking bit at the left). Hope that helps!
((If in doubt, ask someone that looks like a student where G&Ds and the Beat Café is, and tell them it's on the other side of St. Giles to Keble Road and the Ashmolean, but opposite the Nuclear and Astrophsics lab))

Alright! I have a map...
it's available here...

[Moderator: Don't you dare remove this URL. :-p]
or, there's a really massive (better quality) one here... (same thing, but bigger)

[Moderator: same applies]
Now... the University Park is at the very top...
The rail station is at the far left (little black blob)
G & Ds and the Beat Café are in Little Clarendon Street, which is about a fifth of the way down from the top, and 2/5 from the left: The street has no name in it, but has a little blue arrow in it. (They're both on the not-pointy end of the arrow, and either side of the street).
The Bus station is just next to Laser Quest, and is about 1/4 of the way from the left due east of the train station. (Laser Quest is a little North and East of the bus station, about where the red dot is... from the bus station, walk through the newsagent (or through one of the entrances either end of the shops that the newsagent is one of) and there's a BIG SQUARE. LaserQuest is in the top floor of the building directly in front of you (With the cinema on the right). There are signs in the windows, and a door (with stairs) at the left on the ground floor of the building.

Easiest way to get to G&D's is to head towards Worcester college and it's the next street along from there, and as that's marked on all maps it's a good guiding point...it's also near the Ashmolian but I think you just said that...
*sulks*
I wanna go
