Yes I'd like to add to this thread. I hardly know what to say except I'm hugely upset and thinking of you guys too.

My sympathies and thoughts are with the AU and NZ contingent of this site.
I live in an area that is known for brush fires (California, US); even so, it has been hard to get my head around the enormity of the fires in Victoria. I hope that if individuals are responsible for some of the fires that they're brought to justice *soon*.

Thanks all. I have family who live very close to one of the smaller fires but thankfully they have emerged unscathed. My deepest sympathies to all those who didn't.
It has just been a once in a lifetime set of circumstances - the hottest day on record in Victoria at the end of a long period of well below average rainfall and the wind changes were all in the wrong direction at the wrong time.My father was a farmer, brought up in country SA and is still a member of the Victorian Country Fire Authority and he says that even after 40 years of fighting fires he has never seen conditions even close.
The irony of it is that North QLD is underwater. I live 600 miles south of the disaster area (Ingham), and we've had 5" of rain in the last 12 hours. Wish we could send it to Victoria.
If you're OS and looking for information about friends and family the government website - vic.gov.au - should be able to point the way.
If you're in Oz and want to help, the Red Cross was screaming for blood donations. If you can, maybe that's a good way to help.

SpaceCadette, hanging's too good for them.
The Victorian government has announced that it intends that murder charges will be brought against anyone believed to have started any of these fires.

I just followed that link. I thought it looked familiar.
Personally, I'm glad that there are internet wierdos out there who care about the mess we're in. Thanks.
