A Conversation for Bicycle Gearing
Is that Shimano or Campag, sir?

I went to my "bike shop" to buy a crank extractor for a 15-year-old bike. "Certainly, sir. Shimano or Campag?" "No, Stronglight" "Ooh, we don't do those any more - they're obsolete."
Interesting point: if my bike and its gears (especially the old, cheap 5-speed block which I fitted as a temporary measure until I could afford better) are all obsolete as the man says, how come I manage to ride to work and back at speeds of up to 39mph (over 60km/h), even with a tooth missing on one cog?

One of my bikes is a twenty year old Kettler Alpha (aluminium frame) with Shimano Positron. I think that was the world's first indexed gearing. It has a solid cable for the rear. It pushes and pulls. I can't buy the right sized cable for it, and unlike a Bowden cable, you can't simply cut back the outer sheath to shorten it. Because it has to push as well, it has molded fittings at both ends.
A mechanic in a bike shop wants to buy it for his museum!

And I suppose Shimano don't stock parts for 20-year-old equipment. Bummer.

I did get a cable - but it's way too long.
