A Conversation for Midsummer in Sweden: sun, sill and snaps
A wonderful tradition
EcoTony Started conversation Aug 24, 2001
As a child, I often spent my summers in Northern Sweden (Norbotten -- 'north bottom'), and can remember Midsummer as one of the highlights of my trips to Sweden. We would spend a few days in the fields picking wild flowers and building the maypole. I don't recall the drinking part (I was between 2 and 12 years when I would go) so I can't comment on the drinking. Also, my diet at this period in my life centered on hot dogs, burgers & pizza, so I don't have much to say about the food. However, I can say that it was a special time when my cousins from all over Sweden & Europe would return to our Grandparent's summer house.
While I never really learned to speak Swedish (like most Americans exposed to foreign language), I did however, learn the songs. Sadly I never learned their meaings. I sometimes ask my mother (the Swede) what this or that song meant, but today I can't remember any of it except a few verses and the mealodies. Oh well.
Thanks for refreshing a great memory!
