My name is Tony and I live in San Diego, California. More specifically, I live just North of Downtown in an area called University City. I live here with my wife, Maki, our sons Kai and Noah, and our 3 dogs, Gizmo (Shih-Tzu), Hula, (Terrier, Collie, Shepard-mix) and Lacie (Doodle Mix) along with a few fish. We like to rescue our animals from local shelters and rescue groups. We used to live down Ingraham St. near Sea World, a place where you used to be able to check out the Orcas. Today, you might be lucky and have a nice chat with some of the dolphins that reside there (if they have time for your puny human mind).
Maki and I are surfers, we enjoy the lifestyle that surfing in San Diego offers. I am an attorney and I have my own law practice that I often hate when the surf is good. If I am not too busy at work, I can surf almost every morning -- but a warm bed in winter often wins over the draw of getting cold in the water. Of course life doesn't always cooperate, so I have to work more than I would like (I actually work pretty hard for my clients). My Law Practice consists mostly of Workers Compensation Law and I represent injured workers here in California. My advise for anyone injured at work is to always get a lawyer. Maki is a pastry chef. I'm a little too lucky to have have her as my wife and my waist size sometimes shows it.
Maki and I also like to ski and snowboard so we make trips to Mammoth Mountain in the Sierras. Mammoth is one of the best ski areas in the US, and if you can make it up there (there are no major airline flights there yet), you should give it a try. In the fall and spring we like to camp down in the valley near a few of the natrual hot springs located in the BLM land. Camping in the dead of winter, when it can be really cold, isn't advised - Motel 6 works and they take dogs!. When there isn't fresh powder on the hill or on the way, we are usually at the beach surfing.
Maki and I ride longboards, surfboards that are over 9 feet (I ride a 9'6" Sullivant Shapes board. My buddy Kevin Sullivant shaped, coloured, and glassed it - the whole thing from rough blank to finished wave riding machine. Maki rides various Donald Takayama Shapes). What we ride are similar to the surfboards that were ridden 35 years ago. Reciently however, I'v begun to ride short boards (under 9 feet), but my real interests lie in exploring the "Soul Surfing" associated with longboards.
San Diego is a great place to learn to surf. There are hundreds of places to go along the coast. We really enjoy surfing the reef breaks in San Diego's North County. Old Mans' at San Onofre State Beach is one of our favorites. We also like Cardiff Reef and San Elijo, which is just north of that. We are normally at our local beach here in Pacific Beach, California, named Tourmaline Surf Park. If you get there in the early morning, ask one of the old guys at the end of the lot if they have seen Tony and Maki and they can point us out for you.
My new love is R/C (Remote Control) Aeroplanes (Airplanes!). I've found that flying is both fun and challenging. Like surfing, it demands 100% concentration while doing it, and the rewards are just as satisfying. I've found glider flying to be the most challenging. I enjoy building my planes from kits, but an 'ARF' (almost ready to fly) kit is great too becuase you just assemble and fly in just a few hours as opposed to building something over weeks and months from a pile of sticks and glue. I am a member of Silent Electric Flyers of San Diego and just joined the Torry Pines Gulls . Being a member of a flying club makes the experience that much better. Of course I am a member of the national club that provides us insurance and other goodies, the Academy of Model Aeronautics ('AMA').
