A Conversation for Talking Point: Favourite Soap Operas

Knot's Landing

Best soap award!
My favourite character?
I liked them all.
But I am glad they got rid of "Ginger and Kenny" pretty early on!
Greg was a very strong character, but the way he resisted marrying Paige was almost super-human. He should never have married Abby, or Paige's mother Anne. At least they ended up together.
The sister-like relationship between Valene and Karen continued throughout the entire soap. They had their arguements, but they always made up.
Valene's on-off relationship with Gary provided much anguish and amusement.
Gary's alcoholic character was very human and he made many mistakes, including getting hooked by Abby & marrying her.
But all the women loved Gary, I think. Maybe in different ways, but he appealed to the maternal instinct. That's why his relationship with Valene kept restarting, it was always when he needed help, he turned to her, and as a nurturer, she couldn't help herself.
Most unbelievable parts of the soap were when Val's twins were kidnapped at birth by the evil gynochologist and sold to a childless couple.
Oh, and not forgetting the singer who was murdered, Ciji/Kathy. Who returned as another person and had an affair with Gary.
Greatest villain?
Has to be a close call between Abby in Knot's Landing, & J.R. Ewing in Dallas.
Most memorable scene in a soap?
Got to be the shower scene in Dallas when Pam Ewing awoke after being asleep for a year, thought it was Mark in the shower & it turned out to be Bobby.
Another good one was when Sue Ellen pulled back the sheets of her bed because she suspected J.R. had just bedded one of the bridesmaids {and he had!} She then went off & bonked Rusty. Way to go, Sue Ellen.smiley - biggrin
Brad Pitt made his debut on Dallas, as "Randy", Charlotte Wade's first boyfriend. Ray caught them romping in the barn. Lucky girl smiley - winkeye
Knot's Landing just re-ran on "UK Gold" and I never missed an episode. Gripping viewing...smiley - smiley
I would watch Dallas again too.
And "The Colbys". Just for the costumes, you understand.
Why isn't "The Colby's" on your list? The spin-off to "Dynasty".
The wondefully wooden Charlton Heston, so totally out of place in a suit! The absolutely gorgeous Tracy Scoggings...why don't we see more of her? Stephanie Beacham as a prize b*tch, almost as good as Abby in Knot's Landingsmiley - winkeye
Fallon and Jeff's on/off realtionship was one of the highlights of that soap, especially the episode where Fallon & Jeff had had an *encounter* and then Jeff's new fiancee came calling...and Fallon had to sneak out of the apartment by the fire escape in her underwear. She then got dressed, went round the front and knocked on his door! Jeff's face was PRICELESS!smiley - biggrin What a girl.smiley - magic

smiley - bigeyes Are there any people IRL actually called things like 'Paige' or 'Fallon'? I remember that David Lynch totally took the mickey in Twin Peaks with the 'soap within a soap' called "Invitation to Love" that had twins called Jade and Emerald, and a baddie called Montana. Smashing. smiley - biggrin

In fact, didn't someone do an entry on Twin Peaks... ? smiley - winkeye

I've seen many birth announcements including a christian name of Paige since Knot's Landing. Not many "Fallon"'s though smiley - bigeyes
I remember on "Just Good Friends" when Penny thought she was pregnant & Vince excitedly told his parents.
Vince's mum said "If it's a girl, will you call her Fallon"?

Twin Peaks....that passed me by, N7.
Wasn't that David Duchovny's acting debut?
