It's a hedgehog's natural defence instinct to curl up in the face of impending danger, I can not see that they would do anything else, or am I missing an inside joke there?

There's no inside joke. The hedgehogs who curl up are dying out, the ones who don't are living and breeding.

Then the living ones are those that stay away from the roads or are just lucky to reach the other side of the road.

No, the living ones are the ones who think "holy crap there's a big metal thing coming towards me, leg it!" instead of "holy crap there's a big metal thing coming towards me, if I curl up nothing bad will happen."
It's a common myth that *all* hedgehogs curl up in the face of danger.

"It's a common myth that *all* hedgehogs curl up in the face of danger."
That is news to me if it is a natural instinct, as I have always believed I would have thought all of them would curl up.

Natural instinct or not this accelerated behavioural evolution *is* happening.

Is my imagination playing trick on me, or was there hedgehog flavoured crisps for a short while?

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Sep 1, 2005
They weren't hedgehog flavoured, they were heddgehog flavour. There is a big difference. The former has to have extract of real hedgehog in it, while the latter is supposed to taste like a hedgehog, but there is no legal requirement that it tastes anything similar.
