A Conversation for Project: Sexual Orientation

Bisexuality

Straight/gay people seem to be slightly afraid to enter a relationship with a bisexual person because they seem to think they can't fulfil a bisexual person's sexual needs...

I think everyone is slightly bisexual. And some people embrace it, some people misinterpret it, and some just (((try to))) ignore it. But that's just my opinion.

When I told one of my friends I thought I was bi, she told me that she thought I was lucky, because I had twice the chance of finding that perfect person. I guess you can see it that way...

Why, Feather Droujast, I do believe you have just come out. smiley - biggrin

I think it would be nice to add stereotypes for each sexuality, and point out how they are inherently contradictory. For instance, it is common to believe that:

1) Bisexual people get more opportunities, but
2) I would never go out with one because they can't be satisfied or are inherently unfaithful.

Therefore, lots of people don't want to date anyone who is bisexual. And therefore, bisexual people actually get far fewer chances than you would imagine. And therefore, they tend to appreciate the few people who can accept them for who they are without believing the stereotypes.

Obviously, neither stereotype is true. smiley - winkeye

Thanks for the comments, Feather Droujast. What it looks like is happenning is that my 'Sexual Orientation' article is sprouting into several distinct entries. What I'm working on now is turning those sections into complete pieces. Once that's done, I'll copy the material into different entries and rework my 'Sexual Orientation' article into a broad overview that simply links to the in-depth stuff.

I am getting a bit carried away, though, aren't I? smiley - bigeyes

Just FYI, I've lifted out the information on the Kinsey Scale because it was getting out of hand. I'm *fairly* certain that that section is finished now. Do let me know what you think.

The draft is at:

I have finished editing the Sexual Orientation article. I am thinking it may remain in its current long form.

I have also completed a first draft of the entry on Heterosexuality. What do you think?

I am bisexual. Ive known since I was a teenager, and believe me it caused more than a little trouble.
It became common knowledge in junior high school and it caused quite a stir. But being as stubborn as I was back then I didnt care. But the rumors followed me to high school and that is when life became very tough.
I never flaunted or even talked about my sexual preferences to anyone in school, but try getting a date with a guy when there are nonstop rumors that your a lesbian! The girls treated me, mostly like an alien. Then you get the psycho chicks that start hitting on you, following you.
Now that I am in college I am openly bi, and have had no problem. But then again I guess my lifestyle is strange to start to most people.
Biseuality is very liberating. I have two other bi friends, one guy and my best friend a woman. I am very lucky to have them as my friends. (No we have never gotten together)

It sounds nice, Leigh Anne. I'm glad things are easier in college. That's a common experience, I think. I had one bi friend in college who had been out since her early teens, and her experience was a lot like yours. Once her peers matured to something approaching her own level, she was fine.

I think I found bisexuality liberating while I was coming out. It sure was less awkward than pretending to be straight! But years later, I guess I can't imagine being any other way. It's just part of who I am. Your milieage may vary, of course.

I think the biggest problem I have had has been from women surprisingly. First they have a problem when they find out that I am bi, and if they find out I live with a Mistress and practice the lifestyle, they get very weird.
My family has all but disowned me, except for my older sister, but she lives in Seattle. But since I found my Mistress, I really don't care what anyone has to say about me. For the first time in my life I am truely happy and content with myself. But also given my behavior over the last year I guess I am leaning more toward being a lesbian. It seems to suit me better.

I think your family should be happy for you. But then, I know a lot of families that would not understand. For instance, I'm sure my mother would react by refusing to talk about it. That's just her way.

Sometimes it just takes a while for people to get used to new ideas. If you haven't been with your Mistress a long time, there's still hope that they will come around and be a bit more accepting later. You never know.

I hope you are right, that they will eventually learn to at least accept the way I chose to live my life. But knowing the inflexible and stubborness of these people I'm not going to hope to hard!
My mother is about as intolerant as you can get, and I don't even want to say anything about my younger sister, because the words to discribe her will get me kicked off!!
For right or wrong there are people who hold such distorted views of the world. They believe that anyone, even daughters, who do not believe the way they do, they are wrong, or evil, whatever. Can't we all just get along!!!

A friend of mine (who is a strict catholic) is really into the h2g2 site and discovered the pages on sexuality. being the discerning reader she is she checked out some of it in order to understand myself and my partner/"wife" better. she told me about it and i have spent the entire morning at work reading everything and I have to say I was pleased with what I read. It wasn't poltical or biased just good old common sense! the reason i have replied to your posting is because I actually believe that everyone is technically bisexual regardless of which label we give ourselves! i call myself gay and a lesbian but if the day ever came when eing with a man felt right mentally, physically and that other bit i still cant put my finger on I wouldnt rule it out. but i am predominantly atracted to the same sex and therefore in my world I am GAY! but my "wife" is bisexual and actually prefers men but somehow i am just right for her, my last partner was bisexual an has swung to every point of the Kinley scale in the last 2 years but what i am saying is that to make things easier on my friends i ticked the bi box first to give them a chance to get used to the idea and once they had I got very drunk and admitted that i was about as gay as the get! mind you i do have the added problem of being a boyish lesbian with short hair so even before i had made up my mind everyone else had but they still appreciated the drunken honest effort of it! especially considering it cleared up the many problems with my lies before!! So I'd love to hear back from you but hey no worries if this threw you completely it probably doesnt make much sense.

Anyway cheers riggsy!

Hello, riggsy! You know, we really do get the most interesting stories over here, don't we? smiley - bigeyes

I think there are a lot of gay and straight people who have the potential (however small) of loving someone of the gender they don't usually go for. As I said at one point, orientation labels aren't made on the basis of a purity test. They're just a judgment call, you know?

Anyway, thanks very much for the compliments on the articles. I think the project has turned out very well, and I'm proud of it. smiley - smiley

Well...people do reply to these things Anyway thanks for at least reading the nonsense i wrote...i havent logged in and checked out things because relationships have been under strain and work just seems to take up more and more time. You definetley have a right to be proud of this part of the guide. normally whatever you read about the gays, lesbians and bisexuals is written from one persons point of view which can never be objective...between this guide and the queercompany newsletters I feel that i am continually learning what it means to be gay. Not to be on the scene or anything but just to be gay and sometimes i'm not proud of what i learn but no sectoe of the human race is ever proud of everything its people do...but all in all I believe that 'gays' have a better handle on life than most because they have analysed their life seen where problems may lie ahead and plotted the path of least hassle. i realise this my only be me and a few others aa many 'gays' suffer horribly at the hands of their mind and its preconceived ideas of what being gay means for you. but if you get it right it can put alot of things into perspective and mean that you have answered alot of lifes questions sooner than you usually do! Anyway keep up the good work! i'm off to check out the rock climbing section of the site as its my new found 'obbession' calling it a hobby wouldn't justify the enormous amount of time i spend dpoing it reading about it and watching it!

Take care all!
