A Conversation for Talking Point: h2g2 Site Re-Design
Conversation Browsing

It would be less agravating, if the conversation browser always showed the last twenty messages. The current usage of breaking the threads into 20 messages could be maintained after the first back step.
Currently, when you enter a conversation at the 21st message, for instance, forces one to back up to figure what's going on, then move forward to add a comment. That's two extra waits for screen update.
This shouldn't be that hard to implement.
Which skin do you use most often, Goo or Alabaster, and why? Goo, less glare
How many times a week/month do you visit h2g2? Daily, sometimes more
How long do you spend on h2g2 per session, on average? REcently, 2 hrs. and I shouldn't.
Per session, how many times do you visit the Front Page? Usually once
Which page(s) on h2g2, if any, have you added to your favourites or bookmarks list? Have you added the Front Page, your Personal Space, or any other pages? Front page only.
Which of the buttons in the toolbar/goo do you use most? Which do you use least? If you would Please post to this Conversation with the buttons in order of usage, putting the button you use most as number 1, and going to number 11 for the button you use least.
1 My Space
2 Preferences -- by a hair and only recently
3 Search -- recently I spend most of my time in Peer Review so this gets litle use except for looking for other similar articles.
4 H2G2 (Front Page)
5 Main banner -- the first time it changes and seldom after that.
6 Life
6 The Universe
6 Everything
6 Advanded Search -- doesn't provide enough options -- Consider Unix as a standard.
6 Main banner -- the first time it changes and seldom after that.
6 Help
7 BBC Online
7 Read
7 Talk
7 Contribute
7 Who's Online -- it's too awkward to have real time conversations on h2g2. You might consider setting up some real time chat rooms, preferably user defined as well as system standard. If you want to see usage triple VERY quickly, add these.
8 Logout -- I never logout so I seldom have to log back in. I have no idea what that does to 'who's online'
9 Feedback -- I think of this as the whinge at the management button and I haven't found a reason to do that yet.
How often do you use the h2g2 search engine? About onece per session, sometimes more sometimes not at all.
What are you most likely to be searching for? A particular Guide Entry? Something interesting to read? A friend? An old Conversation? Things relating to articles submitted to Peer Review. The search engine options are too primitive to be really useful. A492202 h2g2 Search Buttons will be very handy when it's put on line. If you improve the search engine, that would be even better. And would undoubtedly make h2g2 much more useful as a general tool as well as an entertainment.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
