A Conversation for Talking Point: h2g2 Site Re-Design

I want it to be easier to log in

I want it to be easier to log in, so that when you aren't logged in but reading a thread and then decide to reply, you can log in and then quickly go back to where you were, instead of re-navigating - this isn't that difficult to do either - a bit of javascript should sort it.

I also want the conversations to be threaded by reply order, rather than chronological order.

I use alabaster, but loved goo, and go back to it sometimes, so don't do away with it.

I also use the GuideML program written by one of the users to write my entries, it's too darn hard to do this by hand (well, it's not, but I'm lazy!). A preview feature on this would be good.

I agree with the login problem, it's frustrating. A lot of sites have a small login box and password box (this could be included in the right hand column on entries, where there's an ad if you're not logged in anyway) which saves having to navigate through numerous pages.

Re. conversations, they used to be threaded by reply order, but this meant scrolling through the whole conversation looking for new postings, which was tedious. I think putting them in chronological order is more productive; if you're concerned about multiple threading (which most people aren't) then the advanced conversation view gadget (turned on in the preferences) should make things clearer.

Oh and don't worry, they're not doing away with any skins, they're just planning on more smiley - smiley
The GuideML program - I assume you mean the one written by MaW, I can't remember what it's called offhand - isn't supported or produced by h2g2 itself, so to make suggestions and feedback on that go to the official GuidePost page (GuidePost, that's what it's called smiley - smiley)

Almighty Rob - mourning the old h2g2

I agree.

A simple login box on the home page, or at the very least, a login button rather than a register button - I assume the majority of visitors are not first-timers...

Rob.

I understand that GuideML isn't supported, but I wanted it to be mentioned so that maybe an official one could be written. It would make sense for users to be able to compile their pages offline - as most of us don't like running up huge bills.

I didn't want to comment on that particular program, but rather let the admin know that I was using it and would like to see that particular feature (preview) if they thought about introducing such a program.

I'm not really here

There has been one recommended called Ultra Edit. It's nothing to do with h2g2 or BBC, but there is a download that lets you use all the GuideML tags.

I'd like the Log off Button moved (in Goo), because sometimes I hit it accidently and then as all these people say, it's a very long winded way to log back in.
