[May in the UK]

This as a Vegman is my least favourite month. Most vegetables are at an end of the season, and not a lot coming in to replace them.

POTATOES: Most of the old potatoes are drying up and/or growing. Farmers have had years of experience on how to keep potatoes warm during a cold winter. Unfortunately with the change of climate, resulting in warmer winters, Farmers are not clued up as yet in the art of keeping their stocks cool. This means they start to grow earlier and make it difficult for the average punter to find good a cooking potato.

NEW POTS: In my opinion the best new potato in early May have got to be Portugese. There are two main varieties 'Nicola & Maris Peer'. If you like the good old traditional new potato with a skin that flakes and scrapes well, then Nicola would be your choice. If on the other hand you like a small firm skinned potato then choose Maris Peer.

JERSEY ROYALS & CORNISH NEW: Mid May the prices usually come down to a reasonable level and are plentiful. TIP: Cornish potatoes are grown in acidic soil. If the water in your area as mine is alkerline based, your potatoes will turn black. Add a squeeze of lemon to your cooking water, this will help keep them white.

KENT NEW: Due to weather conditions, Farmers were late planting, I dont expect Kent New till the end of the month at the earliest.
