It might be worth mentioining that each model tends to work very well for describing specific behaviours of the atomic nucleus, but none describes all of them adequately. There is one model which does appear to describe a lot more of them than others, and that's the FCC crystal lattice model.

Well, I thought I'd done that implicitly, but perhaps I ought to make the statement explicit.(smiley - ermI'm not very happy with this Entry at the moment, it seems to have become a bit of a mess w.r.t. Headers, sub-headers, emboldening etc. I might try and reorganise it a bit during half-term next week)

Al, did you get round to sorting it out so you're happy with it? I think it reads really well, but you said you wanted to do some more on it smiley - sadface

smiley - erm I've just got to add a bit about the FCC structure of the nucleus which makes sense without being too lengthy. I've also got to decide what to do about the poem at the end, which I would really like to be there but others say it is subject to copyright. I've been unable to find a version of this on the 'net' which I could even link to.smiley - sadface Give me another week on this please Jimster.

Hello. This is interesting, and even as it stands it looks like a very good Entry.

"From a practical point of view everything in the universe is made of atoms"

Perhaps true from a so-called 'practical' point of view, but I wouldn't want people to be lulled into a false view of the universe. According to our most likely theory of cosmology, about 95% of the universe is made of something about whose nature we have absolutely no idea, and there are of course particles like neutrinos and muons that are individual and not involved in atoms.

Sorry - I haven't time to read the whole Entry right now, actually. If it hasn't been recommended by the time I do get round to it, I'll certainly make time to comment.

Well done!

I do love the detail and treatment of this subject, smiley - ok but I have similar reservations about the simplistic statement:
'From the foregoing we now know that atoms themselves are comprised of three basic 'building blocks', known collectively as sub-atomic (or fundamental) particles. These are protons, neutrons and electrons. '

Perhaps 'know' is too strong a term. smiley - erm Quarks, muons, gluons, etc. are all candidates for 'basic building blocks', not just the popular three.

BTW: the 'END PIECE' seems to be in there twice.

There's a reason for that, explained in the Entry.

Right, I've included something about the FCC structure of the nucleus, which I hope is reasonably explanatory. (I struggled with this, not being a physicist)

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!
