Oh I like like to see these South African entries!
One of the modern events that has shaped the Zulu identiy as a warrior nation was a battle at Isandlwana on 22 January 1879 during the Anglo-Zulu War. It was a very rare instance in South African history of an African army armed with cow-hde shields, assegias(spears) and inferior muskets outmanoeuvring a colonial force with vastely superior weaponry. On that day at least, the Visitors were clobbered and soundly routed and the Home Team emerged victorius. A bit like Custer's last stand at the battle of Little Big Horn in the American west.
If you are interested in a provocative and complete re-telling of tradtional Zulu history, which covers their traditions, mythlology and pre-historical ledgends regarding ancestral migration into what is now northeast South Africa, 'Indaba, My Children' by Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa makes for a fascinating read.

Thanks Nandi. Apologies for not replying sooner.
Would you be interested in helping me with researching the Xhosa tribe or any of the others?
