A Conversation for Talking Point: The Ethics of Being Frozen

A warning from the future

Hoovooloo

Anyone considering having themselves or a loved one frozen should read Larry Niven's short story "Rammer", which is also available as the first section of his novel "A World Out of Time". In it, a man who had himself frozen in the seventies (!) is revived - but not in the way he anticipated. I don't want to say too much more about this, but suffice to say that anyone frozen has NO control over the society they wake up in, or their place in it.

Is this the one where he was awoken, but they needed his heart for another (very rich) patient?
smiley - laugh
I remember watching that on the Outer Limits.
Scared me enough to know I would never want to be frozen.
smiley - yikes

No he is revived, but his body had been destroyed by cancer... they had figured out how to wipe a persons brain (from that time) and they would somehow inject his mind into a new body... It is a very good story... I reccomend reading the whole "World Out Of Time" Novel, as it shows what long life does when you live for a few million years... here and there...

Well my decendance is English, Swiss, German, and Scottish. The four names... Colin, Oppliger, Hohnstein, and Campbell... those togeather are my main blood line. The Swiss Navy is just a little family joke... seeing as my ancestors had to travel through France to get to the ocean to sail here. Switzerland is a landlocked nation... no place to put it's Navy!
